Chapter 7

Abraham went into Midnight Ecstasies to check on the place for Xander, who had been called away on business—again. It seemed this happened with ever increasing frequency, especially so after his brother had been found murdered.

He picked up a cup of coffee and the latest edition of the Post and Courier, then went through the front pages and found nothing of interest. Maybe the other paper would have something.

Leafing through the rest of the newspaper, a picture in the real estate section caught his attention. He read the advertisement for a house for sale in the northern end of the city. Over a century old, it needed some work done inside and appeared to have been vacant for some time. Abraham picked up the phone and called the Low Country realtor for more details.

“I’m interested in the property in today’s paper,” he told the woman who answered the phone.

“The Victorian?”

“If that’s the one pictured on the first page of the section, yes.”

“Let’s see—historic with five bedrooms, several baths, updated plumbing, new kitchen, lots of room and very private. Rear of property backs up to a tidal pool.”

“How much?”

“They wanted seven fifty for it but will take the best offer. It’s been vacant for several years and the owner’s estate wants to get rid of it.”

“Five hundred thousand cash this afternoon.”

“Are you sure, sir?”

“I want the property and I want immediate possession. When can I have an answer?”

“Give me an hour.”

“Fine, I’ll wait to hear from you.”

He hung up and started making plans. He picked up the phone and dialed another number.

“Mrs. Sandeford, this is Abraham Buckman from Xander’s club. I wonder if I could engage your services for a makeover of a house I may be buying? ...Good. I’ll let you know when the purchase is final. I love the work you’ve done here and I know I’ll be extremely happy with whatever you can do with this house.” He hung up and smiled. Everything had begun to fall into place. The ringing of the phone brought him back to the present.

“Hello?”

“The property is yours. Can we meet at three this afternoon? The owners? Well, they’re as anxious to conclude this as you are.”

“Good. I’ll be there with the money and I promise you a healthy bonus.”

“Thank you, sir.”

Abraham showed up at his new investment before everyone else did. He took the time to walk around the outside of the house and the grounds. He had been told right, it needed some work but it didn’t bother him. The outside didn’t appear to be in too bad of shape—the walls still in one piece, the windows as well. The window frames needed paint and a couple of the shutters needed new hinges. The roof looked to be in excellent shape. So far, it didn’t look to be as bad as he’d been led to believe.

He walked around the house and found the lawn overgrown. This didn’t seem to be a heartache either. Abraham made his way toward the tidal pool because it caught a big part of his interest.
